Aquaponics Guide To Aquarium Plant CareSetting Up The Aquarium In Brief

1. Place heating cable, Substore Mix and gravel into the aquarium as per instructions.

2. Place filter, heater thermostat and CO2 system in position but do not turn on until aquarium is filled with water.

3. Decorate the aquarium using bog wood, inert rocks or ceramic ornaments.

4. Fill the aquarium ¾ full of water. This will make the job of planting the aquarium so much easier and more comfortable. If the aquarium is to be left for a few days before planting do not turn the lights on until planted.

5. At least 80% of the substrate should be covered by the plants, with half of those being fast growing plants. This will help counteract algae problems which new aquariums are more prone to.

6. The aquarium can now be filled completely and all the systems checked to see that they are working properly.

They're silver in colour and their large scales have a bright reflective sheen. There are two barbels attached to the lower lip (used for smell) of the cavernous mouth which opens like a trap door. Thus, it is capable of swallowing a very large meal. It is not everyone's taste and neither can it be housed in a standard sized aquarium.

Freshwater Fish - Cichlids

Cyphotilapia frontosa A pair of Cyphotilapia frontosa from the authors aquarium.

One of the most beautiful and distinctive Cichlids of Lake Tanganyika has to be C. frontosa. There are two colour morphs of this species, a Berundi morph, which has six vertical bars and a Tanzanian morph, which has seven or even eight bars when they are young, although in my experience I have only ever encountered the Berundi morph. The males develop a huge lump of fat on the top of its head making this a very distinctive occupant to any aquarium.

Labidochromis caeruleus Labidochromis caeruleus is another example of the splendour to be found in Lake Malawi. There are a number of colour varieties of Labidochromis caeruleus - ranging from yellow, blue to white. This specimen pictured is a subdominant male and thus not showing off his true colours. Like most cichlids of this type they tend to be aggressive towards other members of the family.
